2021 Night Photography Workshops

Early fall is a perfect time to capture the Milky Way in New Jersey. The air is crisp and the activity along the shore has decreased, reducing the normal light pollution issues one would expect in NJ. Each session will take place in the darkest locations in South Jersey which I have been shooting and scouting over the past several years.

The Night Photography Workshop series has been broken down into three very distinctive aspects of capturing images of the night sky. They are preparation, in-the-field shooting and processing. All components are vital to creating a successful image, however it is not required to attend all three workshops to participate in this program.

This series of workshops is designed for those who are interested in learning how to photograph the Milky Way without the need or expense of traveling to a distant location.

Bring your DSLR with manual setting, camera manual, cable release and wide-angle lens.

Cost Per Session: $125 each

In each session, you will learn how to photograph the Milky Way utilizing a DSLR, tripod and cable release. We will focus on capturing pinpoint stars, lighting the foreground and the fun of  shooting the night sky.

We will gather with plenty of time to prepare settings, focus and compose your shot before the galactic center appears in the night sky. We will continue to shoot until it has set below the horizon. The dates scheduled are based on when the moon will set and when the Milky Way can be best seen in the sky.

Night photography has its own set of rules and it takes time to feel totally confident shooting on your own. That is why I have scheduled multiple sessions. Remember, practice makes perfect.

Once you have registered for a session, you will be given a list of equipment and other tools needed to capture pinpoint sharp stars. It is vital that you know how to use your camera in advance of going out on location. Remember, we will be working in total darkness.

The actual location of each workshop will be determined a few days before the session based on the cloud coverage. For those who sign up for multiple sessions, the location will vary to ensure a variety of compositions and foregrounds.

The travel time to each location from the Medford, NJ area is approximately 1½ hours. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from each location.

If you have registered for a particular date and there is inclement weather, a rain date will be provided. This series of workshops is perfect for the beginner or someone who wants to prepare for a future trip.
